Wrap your large breakable item with bubble wrap, tape it up and carefully place it in the box. Then fill the empty space with wrapping paper and tape up your box. Be sure and mark on all sides of the carton in large, bold letters (“FRAGILE”, “CRYSTAL PUNCH BOWL”) so everyone who touches that box knows to give it tender loving care.

 

  1. Clean out your refrigerator early

Unplug and defrost your fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before you move. And avoid packing liquids, just throw them away or use them before you move. Why? They could explode in transit and ruin other items you’ve packed.

 

  1. Packing Flatware

When packing flatware and saucers, place one plate in the center of your packing paper. Grab two sheets of packing paper and wrap (then tape up) your plate. Wrap all of your plates individually.

 

Stack 4 to 6 wrapped plates on top of each other with extra paper in-between each plate. Cover the stacked plates with more wrapping paper, seal it with tape so now you have one solid and secure bundle.

 

Next, turn your wrapped bundle upside down and re-wrap the entire bundle (again). Seal the bundle with plastic tape and place the bundle of flatware in your box so the plates are standing on edge (not flat). Now all you have to do is tape and (clearly) label the box.

 

  1. Packing cups, glasses and stemware

You can use a regular box or a dish pack carton for everyday cups and glasses. Most glasses can be “nested” (one inside another) three or four to a bundle. All you have to do is take your first glass and line it with two sheets of wrapping paper.

 

Then place your second glass inside the first glass and repeat until you have a nest. Lay your nest diagonally on your wrapping paper. Wrap and tape the nested bundle and place it in your box.

 

If your bundles do not fill the box, stuff wadded-up packing paper to fill the empty spaces. Pack goblets and stemware individually. Don’t try to nest them.

 

  1. 8. Packing appliances

Pack your small kitchen appliances together in the same box so you don’t lose track of your items. Wrap each appliance individually with packing paper. Place each wrapped appliance in your box. If there are small empty spaces, wad-up packing paper and fill it in. If you have a lot of space left, pack other things in the box.

 

  1. Packing pots, pans and large bowls

Nest your pots, pans and large bowls three at a time. Place a few sheets of lining paper inside the largest pan. Place the next sized pan inside the first pan. Line it with lining paper then insert the smaller pan. Place your pans upside down in the middle of your wrapping paper. Use paper to wrap the pans then tape them so the bundle is secure.

 

Pack in a medium sized carton and fill any empty space with bubble wrap or wadded up paper.

 

  1. Packing crystal or fine china

For extremely fragile items, we suggest you purchase dish pack cartons, which are extra sturdy. Line the bottom of your carton with plenty of bubble wrap or packing paper. Then pack your china glasses, cups and stemware; then stuff wadded-up packing paper to fill in the empty spaces.  When all dishes are packed, don’t forget to mark the boxes “EXTREMELY FRAGILE” in large letters on all sides of the carton.
