What size boxes should I use to move?
There are 4 main moving box sizes. Small boxes, or "book boxes," are 16x12x12in. and are perfect for smaller items that can become heavy in high quantities. The Medium Box is 18x18x16in. and is perfect for any assortment of items. The Large Box is 18x18x24in. The Extra Large box is 22x22x21in. and is useful for light but bulky items. We suggest using mostly Medium size cartons.
Can I pack/ship/move with used boxes from behind the grocery store?
We always suggest packing, moving, or shipping using new boxes. With used boxes, one NEVER knows who used the boxes before them, or what the contents of the boxes were. Various bugs can lay eggs inside the walls of the boxes. Insects such as bed bugs and other parasites may reside within the box as well. Furthermore, fruits or veggies that have been sprayed with all kinds of pesticides may have been in the box. Lastly, the boxes are far less strong and durable than they once were.
Can I put my books in any size moving box?
For books, the ideal box to use is a 16x12x12 box, also known as a standard small box, book box, or record box. Filling any larger box with small, heavy items (such as books), will most likely result in a box that is too heavy to lift, and possibly incapable of supporting so much weight.
Small moves at Box Brothers would be any move under 2100 lbs. How did we come up with 2100 lbs? Mover have what Box Brothers does not have and that's a minimum,so if you have one item or 10, it will be billed at 2100 lbs. We at Box Brothers, are the small shipments specialists.
"Double Drive" time is more applicable to local moves than long-distance ones. When the mover arrives at your destination of origin, their 'clock' starts and you are being charged for the exact time they spend at your house. Once they leave your destination of origin en route to your new home, you enter "Double Drive" time. This means that the time it takes the mover to travel from your old home to your new one is doubled.
For example: if it takes the mover 10 minutes to travel from your old home to your new one, you will be charged for 20 minutes rather than the 10 minutes it actually took. Once they arrive at your destination, the clock switches back to straight time, and generally remains that way for the remainder of the move as they unload your belongings in your new home.
The reasoning behind "double drive" time is that the movers do not charge for the time it takes them to drive from their warehouse to your house, and back to their warehouse after the job. Double drive time is meant to compensate for this.
How can I save money on my local move?
Many people try to get rid of possessions they no longer need, to reduce the cost of their move. You could hold a garage sale, donate belongings (especially furniture) to a charity, or sell things on eBay/craigslist. By reducing the amount of belongings to be moved, you are thereby reducing the weight and time it takes to move your items, which, in turn, reduces the cost of your move. Additionally, moving some of your items yourself in your car could help lessen the time spent by the movers. Moving plants and unpacked pictures takes movers a great deal of time, as does having to disassemble bed frames, mirrors, and so on. Remember: on a local move, time is money... reduce the time the movers will spend moving you, and you will reduce the cost of your move. In the case of a long distance move, reduce the weight of your move, because long-distance moves are charged by weight rather than time.
Can the movers deliver my furniture on Sunday?
For a long distance move you will need to pay extra and that's still up to the driver. If your moving locally and they picked you up on Sunday chances are you will get a same day delivery unless it takes them all day to load up your furniture and boxes.
How does a mover know how much weight my shipment is?
When moving by weight the driver goes to a local weight station and gets a tare Weight (before). Then loads up your Household goods and goes back to the Weight Station to get the gross Weight (after). Subtract the before from the after and that's your Weight.
How long will it take to move?
There is, unfortunately, no way to predict exactly how long a move will take, as no two houses are the same. The general rule, however, is that every 1000 lbs will take an hour. That's generally 1.5 rooms an hour.
Does Box Brothers have a minimum like movers?
Absolutely NOT. We can move/ship anything from a suitcase to an entire house. We work with a large variety of carriers, each specializing in something a little different. Therefore, we have the advantage of always being able to offer our clients a personalized service, without extraneous costs for unnecessary services and "minimums".
What is the best way to pack dresses, suits, and other clothing that shouldn’t be folded?
A variety of Wardrobe Boxes exist for this exact purpose. There are adult and children's sized wardrobes, and each kind is available in a "regular" size, and slightly bigger "large" size. All of these stand-up Wardrobe Boxes come with a metal hanger bar which is placed horizontally inside the top of the box, and is used to hang your clothing from.
Additionally, there is a "Flat Lay-down Wardrobe" box, which is still long enough to accommodate most clothes without needing to fold them. The only difference between the lay-down wardrobe box and the standard wardrobe boxes, is that, as the name implies, this one lies horizontally flat, whereas the standard one stands upright and your clothes hang from a bar.
Is moving yourself cheaper then hiring a moving company?
It depends. Unfortunately, there is no one answer to this question. Sometimes, moving yourself can be cheaper than hiring a mover. Local moves are most often cheaper if done on your own. If, for example, you are moving long-distance and a truck rental company such as U-Haul needs a truck in the city you happen to be moving to, you may save money on the truck rental. This can help make your move cheaper than it would be with a mover, assuming that: you do all the labor yourself, you purchase gasoline at the lowest price, and don't spend too much money on lodge throughout the trip.
Consider, however, that the truck will consume gas at an extremely high rate; most likely approx. 5MPG. Furthermore, you may run out of room on the truck, in which case you will have to return to the truck rental company and upgrade. What if, for argument's sake, the rental truck breaks down en route? Most often, when you factor in the cost of materials, gas, food, lodge, and rental fees, it becomes cheaper to hire a mover.
When you hire a moving company, you know when your belongings are going to arrive, and you also know how much the move will cost from the get-go. When you move yourself, the additional fees may accumulate, significantly altering your original cost estimation.
Here is a link for a gas calculator that may help you estimate gas costs. http://gasbuddy.com/
Will my belongings be the only things on the moving truck?
That depends. If your move is a local one, this will most likely be the case. If your move is long distance, however, you can assume that the truck will be loaded with other shipments as well (unless your belongings take up an entire truck).
Does my couch need to be packed?
Think of all the dust, bugs, and dirt floating around. We recommend stretch-wrapping the couch all around. Or you can purchase a box made for couches. The mover will often pad your couch for you, but you must consider that those moving pads are usually used and most often unclean.
Do movers charge more for stairs?
Yes they do. If you are moving locally there's not usually a specific charge for this. However, you are being charged by time and it takes longer to walk to the end of the unit and down the stairs. Longer time means more money. When moving long distance there is a charge for flights of stairs, elevators and long carries. A long carry is 50 feet or over, and you are charged for every 50 feet. Your first 75 feet are free.
Yes they can put it inside the truck and deck over it. Remember you will be paying based on weight. Decking is done by putting bars over the car and plywood over the bars. It's like making a whole new floor. In most cases you or the mover might use an open trailer for transport. A car carrier is a great choice or you can have a college student drive it cross country.
Is there a best day and time to move?
The middle of the week is generally considered favorable, such as Wednesday. Remember, you always would prefer to be the first one loaded up that day.
Will movers unhook my washer and dryer?
Most of the time they don't like doing this; especially long distance drivers. It's a liability issue. But on a local move the movers will sometimes agree to do that. Remember: the guys on the truck are working for tips. Always ask before you move about unhooking and hooking up your washer/dryer. There are also 3rd party services which can do this for you.
Will my mover let me use “wardrobe boxes” for free?
Oftentimes, movers will supply free wardrobe boxes for local moves only. When moving long distance, however, you will need to purchase your wardrobe boxes. Even if you are moving locally, be sure to check with your mover to confirm whether or not there is a fee or rental charge. Generally, when a mover provides a customer with wardrobe boxes, they are given them on the day of the move. Furthermore, the boxes must be returned promptly at the completion of the move. Don't forget, these boxes will be used. CLICK HERE for our article regarding the hazards of used boxes.
Tip: There should be some extra room at the bottom of your wardrobe boxes after you've packed them. You can use this space for shoes, or any other items you see fit.
How much notice does a moving company need to move me?
Are you moving local or long distance? If it’s a local move 2 weeks should be fine. If it’s a weekend move at the end of the month, you will want to give more notice. The middle of the week will always be your best bet. The summer is always the busiest when kids are out of school. And the most expensive time to move also. In this case, a 4-week notice should suffice.
What if my house is not ready to be moved into?
Ask and see if your mover can deliver on another day. If that does not work then see if you can have the mover deliver your belongings into the garage if it’s ready. The movers should have a warehouse were it will go into S.I.T. (Storage in transit). Self-storage is not recommended.

Is using newspaper for packing a good choice?
Packing with newspaper often results in an ink-stained mess. Expect your hands, clothes, and items being packed to be dirty and ink-stained. Newspaper ink is capable of staining your clothing and dishes in a manner that neither a washing machine nor dishwasher will be able to clean.
Although bubble wrap is usually considered more reliable for packing with, it is usually more expensive than using paper. The best solution is to use blank newspaper. Blank newsprint is a clean and effective packing material. You need not worry about ink stains or dirt, as the paper is blank and much cleaner than a regular newspaper that has travelled through countless (unclean) environments. When packing with blank newsprint, be liberal with your paper. Use ample sheets of paper, especially for fragile items such as dishes and china.
Stop by your local Box Brothers today for all your packing materials, and take advantage of a wealth of moving tips and information!
